Residential Customer Group
Mission and Purpose

The Residential Customer Group (RCG) is a non-profit organization created to promote the interests of Michigan residential public utility customers, and to advocate for:

  • just and reasonable public utility costs and rates
  • the protection of customer health, safety, and privacy as impacted by utility services
  • efficient, safe, and economical utility infrastructure and services

The RCG intervenes in utility and energy cases before the Michigan Public Service Commission and initiates or participates in court appeals arising from MPSC proceedings or which involve matters otherwise affecting utility customer interests.  RCG primarily focuses upon Michigan gas and electric utilities, including DTE Electric, DTE Gas, Consumers Energy Company electric and gas, Indiana Michigan Power Company, and potentially other Michigan utilities.  The RCG in these utility and energy cases often challenges specific aspects of a utility’s alleged investment, operating costs, capital costs, and cost allocations and tariff terms, or accounting practices, that are unreasonable and imprudent.  RCG’s focus is to challenge, and to seek reductions to, the utility rates charged to the residential class of customers, and to challenge inadequate utility services.
